Less than a week ago, Oakland’s 50th homicide of the year went down about 6 blocks from our house. We heard the shots (there was a flurry).
So sad.

I’m from the UK. Hardly anyone dies from gunshots because hardly anyone owns firearms.
The Democrats should have stuck to their guns and took on the NRA, and worked hard to make America safer. Maybe by showing some political courage they’d have won over some pragmatic republicans.
Homocide? Is that the killing of a homo? Ohhh, you mean homicide.
Thanks “William!” Corrected now…
You also need a comma after the word “ago,” without which you have a run-on sentence, one of my 15 Mistakes Good Writers Avoid (TM). “Went down” is a non-standard neologism that should be avoided by educated writers.’ “So sad.” is a sentence fragment. I am available for professional blog editing at reasonable rates.
Comma added!
I think I’m just going to leverage whatever free input you give via the comments and continue you reading your column in the Sunday NYT Magazine.
Never pretended to be an educated writer…
(I know, sentence fragment and ;,-,) is invalid punctuation…)
I recognize your Yahoo aalleigaince and yet realy enjoy your blog. Any chance you’d add Feedbliz as an option to opt-in to get your blog updates? I am tech-challenged but have no biz relationship with Feedblitz.. just find it easy to use… and yes your dog looks adorable… and the gun record there is so regrettable consdiering the many wonderful parts of Oakland

Thanks so much for your attempt to point out a very serious issue in Oakland. Sadly, we see this not only in Oakland but nearly every urban center in America. Even our cherished San Francisco has seen a dramatic rise in homicides.
I applaud the fact that you took the time to point this out in your blog - but IMO I’m not sure what is more tragic; the continued escalation of sensless violence in our neighborhoods and streets or the numbness in which many Americans display in what continues to be the ugly under belly of America.
