Yahoo buys Bix

I said it all over here.

So one thing to note… It turns out that the voice in my head does sound a lot better than the one that is being recorded. Something must be defective with the microphone, the Bix system, or whatever that keeps knocking it out of tune. Until I debug that system, I won’t be posting any karaoke.

Also - we need to get some cooler songs into the Bix karaoke system.

Set the wayback machine to 1999 and take a look at the open mic feature of the disasterous Y! Digital.

Haven’t played with Bix, but the concept seems familiar…

One of the very interesting phenoms of late is the degree to which it’s “deja vu all over again.” The joke amongst the VC community is that they are seeing (literally) the exact same business plans they saw in 1999. And they can’t out of hand dismiss them. The business plans are the same, but the world has changed. Broadband penetration, sophistication of users, mindset of content owners, etc.

Nowhere is this more prevalent (or closer to home for me) than in the video space. I’d seen that wave almost hit shore umpteen times.

I’m not suggesting Bix is in any way like Y! Digital beyond the basic core idea.

The problem with Y! Digital was horrible implementation by a very weak production team. Ideas aren’t worth anything without strong execution. It sounds like Y! got themselves a strong team with Bix.

That combined with ubiqitous bandwidth that is now available, digital video cameras that make getting content into the computer easy and a larger audience suggests that the Bix model might work now.

[…] Bradley only teased us in his announcement of the Bix acquisition (c’mon Bradley, post the karaoke!), but I’m laying it all bare with my rendition of the Roger Miller classic, “King of the Road.” It’s one of my favorite songs, but my version doesn’t do it justice, thought it was fun. Here it is anyway (the photo is with my lovely fiancee Nancy, and I’m wearing my favorite western shirt). […]
